Grid-tied, hybrid or off-grid: which solar setup is right for you?

Nearly every solar system falls into one of three types, and choosing the right one matters more than almost any other decision. Here’s what each means, in plain English.

Grid-tied: the simplest and most common

A grid-tied system has panels and an inverter and stays connected to the grid. You use solar when the sun’s shining, draw from the grid when it isn’t, and export any excess. It’s the cheapest option and suits most homes and businesses. The trade-off: if the grid goes down, a standard grid-tied system shuts off for safety, so it doesn’t provide backup during a power cut.

Hybrid: solar plus a battery

A hybrid system adds a battery, so surplus daytime solar can be stored and used at night — lifting your self-consumption and, with the right setup, keeping essential circuits running through an outage. It costs more than grid-tied, and the payback maths depends on your usage, but it’s the sweet spot for households that want more independence and some resilience.

Off-grid: fully self-sufficient

An off-grid system isn’t connected to the grid at all — it relies on a larger array, a big battery bank, and usually a backup generator for the depths of winter. It’s the right answer where connecting to the grid is impossible or hugely expensive, such as remote or rural sites, but it demands careful design under AS/NZS 4509 and a bigger budget. Undersize it and you’ll be sitting in the dark on a still, cloudy week.

How to choose

• On the grid and just want lower bills? Grid-tied is usually the right start.
• Want backup and more independence, and use a lot of power after dark? Look at hybrid.
• Off the grid or facing a huge connection cost? Off-grid, designed properly.
• Not sure? The right call depends on your site, budget and how you use power.
