Solar and batteries on the fireground: what first responders need to know
For a first responder arriving at a property, solar changes the picture in ways that aren’t always obvious from the street. A house with panels is a live electrical generator, and getting the response right starts with understanding a few key things.
The panels are live whenever there’s light
You can’t ‘switch off’ a solar array the way you can the mains. As long as light is hitting the panels — daylight, and even strong scene lighting — they’re generating DC voltage, and the DC cabling between the panels and the inverter stays live. Isolating the main switchboard doesn’t make the array or its DC wiring safe.
Know where to isolate
A compliant system has isolation points — typically an AC isolator near the inverter and a DC isolator at or near the array — and a well-installed system is labelled to show them. Knowing to look for these, and understanding what each one does and doesn’t make safe, is central to a safe approach.
Batteries add another layer
A home battery stores significant energy and can’t simply be switched off either. Damaged lithium batteries carry risks of their own, including thermal runaway and re-ignition, and they may keep supplying power to parts of the installation. Batteries in New Zealand are installed to AS/NZS 5139, which sets rules on their location and protection — knowing where a battery is likely to be, and how it behaves, matters on scene.

None of this is a reason to fear solar — it’s a reason to understand it. Hands-on familiarity with real components, isolation points and battery behaviour turns uncertainty into a confident, safe response. Slides only go so far; seeing and handling the actual equipment is what makes it stick.
